Hello All...

Below is a pic of the reverse crossguard of a German Army (Heer) Officer's Dagger. It is engraved with the original owner's initials. I am curious of any information that can be found -such as in any bound listing of Army Officer Names (Wehrmacht Heer Rankliste).

I have already found a list of possible names from award lists such as the Knight's Cross recipient list:

1.) Walther von Brauchitsch, Generaloberst, RK: 9-30-39 (fittings would have been gilt [gold] for Generals)2.) Werner von Bercken, Generalleutnant, RK: 10-23-44 (fittings would have been gilt [gold] for Generals)3.) Walter von Boltenstern, Generalmajor, RK: 8-13-41 (fittings would have been gilt [gold] for Generals)4.) Wolfgang von Bostell, Leutnant, RK: 9-2-44, Oakleavess: 4-30-45 (possible, but no documentation)5.) Werner von Braun, Rocket Scientist (had SS commission, but not Army)6.) Werner von Blomberg, Generalfeldmarschall, Blue Max: 6-18 (fittings would have been gilt [gold] for Generals) Of course, of this list- the only possible person would be #4. But the original owner might not be a Ritterkreuz (RK) recipient. If anybody has access to any of the annual Heer rank lists, please let me know of any name for 'W.v.B.' Thanks!

The "von" means that he was a blue blood, there is a listing of blue bloods, hard to get ahold of, those are large land owners,..... most of them are/were Baron's, or Baroness's or higher.  So, that will narrow it down, but there were 7 million German soldiers during WWII, don't know how many officers that equates out to, but thousands and thousands.  So, you might be able to narrow it down to a few hundred people, but still probably far too many to figure anything out definitely.

Thank you mightythor99...

I had known that the 'von' part of a German name identified the person as being 'from' a family of influence and importance, and most likely a land owner. To consider that the person could also be of royal descent is something I hadn't considered, since if the family was that influential -they would either be a General or deferred from military service entirely. But if the family didn't hold favor with the regime to garner such special treatment, they could still serve with distinction as an officer.

I would still like to receive input from anyone with access to the Rankliste from any period of the war or prior to -to see who this may have belonged to.

Thank you again!

Mil Spec out.
