Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the militaria world, but I'm doing my best to catch up. I decided to start my collection by looking for items associated with either my grandfather's battalion, regiment, and/or division (1st Battalion, 307th infantry reg., 77th Division) or the theater of war in which he served (Pacific). I decided my first project would be a recreation of the dress uniform that my grandfather would have likely worn home when he was discharged. Sadly, his original one was lost to time- decorations, uniform, and all, and I don't have any pictures of him in it. But I do have his service record which does list his medals and decorations. So my question is which books do you recommend to help me recreate his uniform (meaning proper uniform type, rank, insignia, decorations in their proper display), and which ones do you recommend to help me spot the many reproductions on the market- since I only want to use original materials? Also I have some more questions below- So far I've thumbed through about a half a dozen works on World War 2 uniforms, and they all do a great job describing the plethora of uniform types for officers and enlisted. The problem is none of them have helped me determine which type or style of dress uniform a Tech 5 from the Pacific theater would likely have worn when he returned home in 1946 (he enlisted in Nov. 1942 if this helps). Also, those books didn't explain which insignia, patches, ribbons, medals, etc. someone of my grandfather's rank would include on his uniform and where he would have put them if he followed regulations. For example, he would have worn the 77th Division patch on his left sleeve- what would he have likely worn on his right in 1946? the 10th army patch, Western Pacific Patch or what? And can someone tell me if his battalion was cited for the Distinguished Unit citiation which would allow him to wear that patch? What type of dress headgear would a NCO likely wear- overseas/envelope?. And finally, since he served at the battalion headquarters as the driver for his commanding officer, does this mean he wore HQ insignia? Sorry for the long post and numerous questions- but when in doubt I thought I should ask the experts. Again, I know that no source can tell me exactly what my grandfather's uniform looked like, but I would like some help in making an educated guesses- thanks for your help. Robert
